Psalm 36:7 How Excellent Is Thy Lovingkindness

Psalm 36:7 (KJV) How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

The psalmist emphasizes God’s love and care for all who put their trust in the LORD. The lovingkindness of God speaks of His loyalty, faithfulness and goodness towards His people. This word translated “lovingkindness” expresses the basic character of God, the concept of faithfulness, steadfast love, or more generally kindness is represented by this word “Hesed” in the Hebrew. 

God’s love is described as “excellent”. The word “excellent” means “valuable, rare, precious”.  Like the “hid treasure in a field that our Lord gave in a parable in Matthew 13:44 and the pearl of great price that a man sold all that he had and bought it in Matthew 13:44 (KJV) Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

This is the testimony of the psalmist by experience. The “lovingkindness” of God, the Hebrew word “Hesed” shows forth the Lord’s covenant faithfulness and kindness. This is applied to His creation of which man stands out as the focus of God’s creative power and utmost care, for only man is made in the image of God. Amen.
