Romans 6:23 The Gift of God

Romans 6:23 (KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The word “wages” is a military term for what is appointed for soldiers to buy food ration, an allowance or pay, generally it means a man’s subsistence. What it means here is the compensation for serving sin, the reward, the end result of man living a life of sin is that ultimately, he dies. This is the payment to man for serving sin, there is “physical death” – For the wages of sin is death. The remedy for death is to receive God’s gift of eternal life. Our text begins with the conjunction “For” introducing an explanation, expression cause or reason for. The reason why man dies is because of man’s sin.

The gift of God is eternal life. It comes through Jesus Christ our Lord. The greatest gift of all is God’s gift of eternal life. This gift of God is yours to receive, Pray that this gift is yours to claim. The gift of eternal life is freely given by God to all man, given for our present good and our future goodness. It shows forth the benevolence and the sacrifice God made to make this gift possible.

Life in our text is contrasted with death. Death our text explains to us in the consequence of sin. A correlation that man often deny, is ignorant but the truth must be brought to bear if man is to be truly helped. Amen.
