Psalm 119:33-35 Gladly Follow

Psalm 119:33-35 (KJV)  HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. 34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. 35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

A statute is an expectation or mandate prescribed by a decree from God. The psalmist asked God to show him clearly what is His prescribed will and he has committed himself to “keep it unto the end”. In other words, to obey fully God’s direction for him.

He also by prayer request he may obey with understanding. He asked that God would reveal His mind to him so that he may know the “why” and the “how” of God’s law.

With good understanding given by God concerning His way, it is his prayer that God will also enable him to walk in it. For he has understood that this is the best path for him and he would gladly follow the LORD.

When the children of Israel were in the wilderness, God led them by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. Their role was to promptly respond to God’s call to action.

The believer is led by the indwelling Holy Spirit that uses God’s Word to lead him in his way. His role is to take time to learn of God in His Word so that he is rightly directed.

Thank God that He does not leave us to wander but gently leads us in the homeward way. Amen.
