Revelation 8:1; Silence – A Precursor to Judgment

Revelation 8:1 And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.

There was silence upon heaven for half an hour and then the terrible trumpet judgments were unleashed. The heavens were full of sound up to this point with the uninterrupted praise of the saints at the throne of God. Silence in the Old Testament is frequently the precursor of judgment (lsaiah 41:1; Amos 8:3). [Clinton E. Arnold, Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary, Zondervan, 2002, 299.]

Isaiah 47:7 Keep silence before me, 0 islands; and let the people renew their strength: let them come near; then let them speak: let us come near together to judgment.

Amos 8:3 And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord God: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.

The silence comes after the opening of 6 seals.

1st seal: Rider on White Horse = The Antichrist
2nd seal: Rider on Red Horse = Wars, Threats, Terrorism

3rd seal: Rider on Black Horse = Famine, Economic Ruin

4th seal: Rider on Pale Horse = Death
5ft seal: Martyred souls more persecutions
6ft seal: Physical disturbances Earthquakes
76 seal: Silence 7 trumpets begin

The terrible stillness must have resonated through throughout heaven, as one that is holding his breath, in anticipation. With the opening of the last seal, the scroll is finally fully opened and its contents are fully known. This half-hour is a brief time before fury would be outpoured with vehemence.

The church of Jesus Christ is safely gathered in heaven. Thank God for His mercy.

Sing the wondrous love of Jesus
Sing his mercy and his grace
In the mansions bright and blessed
He’ll prepare for us a place.

When we all get to heaven
What a day of rejoicing that will be
When we all see Jesus
We’ll sing and shout the victory.

While we walk the pilgrim pathway
Clouds will overspread the sky
But when travlin’ days are over
Not a shadow, not a sigh.

When we all get to heaven
What a day of rejoicing that will be
When we all see Jesus
We’ll sing and shout the victory.

Onward to the prize before us
Soon his beauty we’ll behold
Soon the pearly gates will open
We shall tread the streets of gold.

When we all get to heaven
What a day of rejoicing that will be
When we all see Jesus
We’ll sing and shout the victory.

Amen and Amen.
