Lord’s Day, Vol. 8 No. 5

Our Bible Reading (2)

Let us meditate upon the encouraging words of the psalmist in Psalm 19:7-11:

7The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.”

Let us recap:

God’s Word has the power to impart spiritual life (v7a).

God’s Word has the power of imparting wisdom for life (v7b).

God’s Word has the power to rejoice the heart (v8a).

God’s Word has the power to impart understanding to direct a person in the pathway of life (v8b). The commandment of the LORD is well summarised by the Ten Commandments given by God to Moses at Mount Sinai (Exodus 20:1-20) governing man’s relationship with God and his fellow men. Distinguishes clearly between good and evil. The word “pure” means “clear”. Not cluttered, but clear. It is enlightening to the eyes – Matthew 6:22-23The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! It is the real good stuff properly distilled to bring forth the essence – Psalm 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words:as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

God’s Word imparts God’s fear in the hearts of His people granting them the strength to obey His commandments (v9a). The word “clean” means “brings holiness”. As such, there no rebuke from God for such a life, thus enduring forever.

God’s Word has the power to judge, to pronounce one guilty or be acquitted. It is always rightly meted out, fair and just (v9b) – Psalm 119:142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth. The transgressor of God’s law stands guilty before God. There is no escape from His righteous judgment. As such, the sinner is moved to repent and make right with God.

Thus, God’s Word is most precious. It’s value surpasses the finest treasures on earth – yea, than much fine gold. It’s value to nourish and refresh the soul is like honey and the honeycomb to the physical man.

Hence, leading us to willingly love and obey it. “Keeping” has a sense of a continual strength to love and obey. For it brings great reward from God, blessings now and forevermore.

The benefits of reading the Bible must not be underestimated. The psalmist articulated well for our eternal profit. May we be diligent students and obedient doers of His Word. By the grace of God, we shall make it! I encourage you to persevere. Amen.
