1 Corinthians 6:4-5, One Able to Judge Between His Brethren

1 Corinthians 6:4-5 If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church. I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?

The Apostle Paul seeks to impress upon the hearts of the Corinthian Christians that it is foolish for them to seek settlement for their disputes outside of the church in the civil courts. He acknowledges that there is indeed a need for settlement. But he is seeking restrain from them so that these disputes may be amicably resolved among peacefully in church amongst the brethren.

He highlights that it is shameful for the believers who claim power by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and God’s Word to overcome sin yet do not show forth this testimony in their church life. The name of Christ is tarnished by their lack of self-restrain. This cannot continue. It retards the church’s witness! As such, he is seeking for believers to exercise forbearance and repent from their selfish assertions that harms the body of Christ.

May the Lord be gracious to grant His church bear the Spirit’s fruit for His honour and glory. Amen.
