1 Corinthians 3:1, Babes in Christ

1 Corinthians 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

The Apostle Paul describes the Christians as carnal in that they are spiritually immature. It does not mean they are not saved. He uses the term “babes in Christ” to denote those who are not growing spiritually but are still spiritual babies. It is sad to see malnourished children who are not growing because of the lack of nutritious food intake. He is using this as an illustration to describe those who cannot accept the instruction that a spiritual man will need.

How is this so? One reason is that the world’s value system still has a stronghold on their hearts. Not taking time and giving priority to study God’s Word, in fact, causes such Christians to stagnate in their spiritual growth. They may be Christians for a long time but their spiritual maturity is not directly proportional to their spiritual state. It is sad.

May God’s people appropriate the means of grace that God has given in the local church through bible studies and prayer meeting and worship for their spiritual advancement. Amen.
