Hymns: RHC 358 What a Friend We Have in Jesus, 96 He Keeps Me Singing, 367 There Shall Be Showers of Blessing

Preparation for Hard Times (3)

Psalm 119:41-64 (KJV)

41 Let thy mercies come also unto me, O LORD, even thy salvation, according to thy word. 42 So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word. 43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments. 44 So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever. 45 And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts. 46 I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed. 47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved. 48 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?

Matthew 27:45-49 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Does God abandon His children? In life, there are times when God allows us to go through such heavy afflictions we feel as if God has abandoned us. When the burden becomes so heavy, so real and painful, a sense of abandonment can come upon us and cause us to struggle to keep our faith and trust God.

But God is faithful. He will not abandon His children. When He saves us, we are saved and “safe” and “secured” for all eternity.

The Scripture tells us that Jesus Christ secured our salvation when He took upon Himself the full weight of all our sins on the cross. When Jesus Christ went to the cross, He was our sin bearer. “Him who knew no sin, God hath made to be sin for us.”

Psalm 13

From Privation to Peace

1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? 2 How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? 3 Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, 4 lest I sleep the sleep of death; Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved. 5 But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. 6 I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

(1) The Old Rugged Cross

“The Old Rugged Cross” is the most frequently requested hymn. Songbook editors have designated it as the most popular of all hymns. Within thirty years of its publication in 1913, more than twenty million copies had been sold.

“The Old Rugged Cross” declares in simple and yet sublime words the central truth of the gospel, and it speaks to the need of every believer.

The Apostle Paul’s motto for service is a willing heart regardless of reward. And for this, God is pleased. It was a work of faith, trusting God to take care of all things as he devotes his life and time and resources to serve his Lord Christ.

It is a stewardship, a sacred trust committed to him to fulfil this holy ministry. Jesus’ promise that He his authority and presence will go with His servants is most reassuring and also most real. Through the Acts of the Apostles from the time he was commissioned on the first missionary journey by the Holy Ghost, his Lord was there with him as the Master Strategist, Advocate and Protector. He survived thirst, hunger, stoning, diverse persecution and temptation.

Acts 15:1-18 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question. And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren. And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.

Acts 14:21-28 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia. And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia: And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled. And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. And there they abode long time with the disciples.

The Investment of a Life

Ecclesiastes 11:7-10

7 Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun: 8 But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity. 9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. 10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.

Acts 14:1-20 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed. But the unbelieving …

Wise Up

Ecclesiastes 10:1-7

1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour. 2 A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left. 3 Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool. 4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences. 5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler: 6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place. 7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
