2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture Is Profitable

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV)  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

We must confess that we have a perfect Saviour, a perfect Book and a perfect sanctifying Spirit of God so the Scripture can rightly command us to be throughly furnished unto all good works, to go on toward spiritual maturity. We should press toward spiritual maturity. We cannot give up for Jesus Himself said, “Be ye also perfect even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Our text tells us what Scripture says concerning how we should strive toward the perfection that God wants from us.

Paul says to Timothy in verse 15 that scripture has the power to make thee wise unto salvation. Indeed, the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18). Scripture delivers all truths that are sufficient and needful for our salvation. That is the sense of verse 15 and Timothy is a living testimony of the life-transforming words of God.

Understood in the context of verse 16a, it conveys the fact that Scripture is life-giving. Just as God breathed into the nostrils of Adam the breath of life; and he became a living soul, the Holy Spirit uses Scripture to give to man spiritual life.

Verse 16b, firstly, it teaches us the principles of the Christian faith. Secondly, it reproofs errors and false doctrines. Thirdly, for correction of life and evil manners! Fourthly, instructions in the precepts of holy life and Christian conversation!

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, the knowledge of God and from God in Scripture is the highest knowledge, the apex of all knowledge and Paul is commending the perfect precepts of Scriptures to Timothy. It is the basis or foundation of our faith. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

May our response be like the psalmist, “With my whole heart have I sought thee, O let me now wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalm 119:10-11) Amen.
