Proverbs 25:28 An Ungoverned Spirit

Proverbs 25:28 (KJV)  He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

The emphasis of the divine writer is to give a picture of a ruined city to awaken the reader to the danger of having poor control over one’s spirit. The greatest personal achievement is one having a hold of oneself – one who has a rule over his own spirit.

The city that is without walls is prone to fall prey to invaders. One who lacks self-control suffers the consequences of his excesses.

Haman yields himself to the first assault of his ungoverned passions, offering resistance; like a city broken down and without walls, the object of contempt.

Esther 3:5-6, 13 “And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath. And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai…And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.”

May the Lord grant His people the spirit of self-control. Amen.
