Lord’s Day, Vol. 8 No. 6

The Christian’s Response to Coronavirus Outbreak

Our Lord is still on the throne. May the people of God seek to trust in His care during this time of need. God’s people may not understand the ins and outs of the situation but they can trust God’s sovereign protection over them.

(1) Faith and Not Fear

Let God’s people, therefore, exercise faith and not fear. Let us be reminded that our Lord’s care is not diminished one wit in the face of the strongest virus – Psalm 121:1-8 A Song of degrees. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. 3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. 6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. 8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Let us take time to meditate upon God’s promises of His care and protection over His people. He is with us and a very present help for His people during this time of need. Let us keep faith that He will preserve us from all evil!

God’s people is to trust God’s protection in the face of pestilence that may be threatening their very lives – Psalm 91:1-7 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

The sequel of this psalm provides us with more assurances of His care for us – Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Let us be willing to trust God to protect us come what may, is He not able to help? God is indeed still on the throne!

(1) Pray and Not Panic

May God’s people take time to pray, seeking the Lord’s protection daily over the attack of the virus in their going out and coming in. And trust in the Lord having committed our safe keeping in His hands through prayer.

Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Let us be specific to articulate our needs at the throne of grace and find mercy and help in all our troubles.

  • Worry Not (Be careful for nothing…)
  • Willing Whole-Hearted Prayer (but in everything…)
  • Wherewithal of Prayer (by prayer and supplication…)
  • Worship (with thanksgiving…)
  • Words of Prayer (let your request be made known unto God…)
  • Wonders of Prayer (And the peace of God which passes all understanding…)
  • Well-being Through Prayer (shall keep your hearts and minds…)
  • Wisdom of Prayer (…through Christ Jesus.)

After we have cast all our care and anxiety on the Lord Jesus Christ Who cares for us (1 Peter 5:7); after we stop worrying about everything imaginable; after we speak to the Lord through prayer and supplication, letting our requests “with thanksgiving be made known unto God”; then “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

May the Lord enable His people to experience the promise of His abiding peace with us as we articulate our fears and desperate plight to Him through prayer, seeking His presence to still our hearts for our every need. Amen.

Yours lovingly,
