Revelation 3:18; Anoint Thy Eyes With Salve

– and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

And they are asked to buy eye salve to anoint their eyes. This city was a major banking centre, He asked them to go for spiritual riches. They were famous for black wool, He wants them to go for white garments of righteousness. And they had a medical centre that produced eye salve to give physical healing to the eyes. He said that He would give to them true spiritual sight and understanding. They live in a place treated for its treatment of the eye, yet they were spiritually blind.

19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

These people needed the gold of true spiritual riches, the garment of true righteousness and the sight of true spiritual understanding. They were unconverted.

Verse 20 tells us that Christ is still outside on the outside trying to get in. And so it tells us that these are a group of unbelievers. The word “rebuke” means “to expose or to convict”.

Take not here that this word “love”. This is not agape but philo, a love of personal affection to show that despite the church’s poor attitude toward Christ, He still has tender affectionate feelings toward this church. It is this love that caused the words of rebuke to come. The word for “be zealous” and “repent” commands that speaks of action not started. They are to “repent”, turn from their error and turn toward God.

Psalms 32:6 “For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him. Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

David makes an address to all who reads the psalm to quickly make right with God before judgment comes. The prophet Jeremiah gives these comforting thoughts to teach us that confession and repentance are for our good always. Jeremiah 29:11-13 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” Amen.
