Lord’s Day, Vol. 7 No. 49

Family Day 2019

Thank God for gathering the church family together for Family Day 2019 on 7 December at Hotel Fort Canning. We looked at the theme “How to Study the Bible?” in our messages.

We looked at the Three Principles of Bible Study – “C…I…A…”.

  • The Joshua 1:8 principle of Contextualization – Deliberate on what it says

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.Josh 1:8 (KJV)

  • Meditate, Observe, Deliberate, Contemplate, Ponder, Think, Consider, Mull over, Turn over your mind, Question – Who, What Where, Why, When, What and How?

Ask: What does the passage say?

  • The 2 Timothy 2:15 principle of Interpretation – Discover what it means

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.2 Tim 2:15 (KJV)

Rightly Dividing, Understand, Deduce, Infer, Decipher, Unravel, Figure Out, Explain, Shed Light on, Illuminate, Clarify.

Ask: What does the passage mean?

(3) The 2 Timothy 3:16-17 principle of Application – Determine how it works

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV)

– Reflecting, Renewing, Ordering my life, Changing, Teaching, Reproofing, Correcting, Training in Righteousness, Transforming.

Ask: How does the meaning of this passage apply to me?

When we know what God says, what He means, and how to put His truths into practice, we will be equipped for every circumstance of life.

Doctrine is what the Word of God says on any particular subject. That teaching is always true. Therefore, everything that God says in His Word about any given subject is absolute truth. Find out what God’s Word says on any particular subject through accurate observation and correct interpretation. Once we understand what the Word of God teaches, we are obligated before God to accept that truth and live by it. When we have adjusted any false concepts or teaching we may have believed and have embraced the truth revealed in God’s Word, then we have applied what you have learned.

Reproof exposes areas in our thinking and behaviour that do not align with God’s Word. Reproof is finding out where we have thought wrongly or where we have not been doing what God says is right. The application of reproof is to accept it and agree with God, acknowledging where we are wrong in thought and in behaviour. This is how we are set free from unbelief and from sin.

Correction is the next area of application, and often the most difficult. Many times, we can see what is wrong, but perhaps we are reluctant to take the necessary steps to correct it. God has not left us without help or without answers in this step of correcting what is wrong. Sometimes the answers are difficult to find, but they are always there, and any child of God who wants to please his or her Father will be shown by the Spirit of God how to do so. Many times, correction comes by simply confessing and forsaking what is wrong. Other times, God gives definite steps to take.

Training in righteousness –Although God’s Word is profitable for reproof and correction, the Bible was also given to us as a handbook for living.

As we spend time studying God’s Word, God equips us through:

  • TEACHINGS
    • COMMANDS
    • PROMISES
    • EXHORTATIONS
    • WARNINGS
    • THE LIVES OF BIBLICAL CHARACTERS
    • ACCOUNTS OF GOD’S DEALINGS WITH MAN

As we get into the Word of God and get to know God, we see how God intends for you to live. To live the way God says to live is to live righteously.

After lunch, we took a walk together to the Fort Canning Centre for “The Bicentennial Experience” – From Singapore to Singaporean: The Bicentennial Experience brings to life Singapore’s momentous evolution from 1299, shaped by wider regional and global shifts.

It comprises an immersive, ticketed experience within the Fort Canning Centre, and a free and easy exploration through pavilions within the greenery of Fort Gate.

Thank God for granting us safety, good weather and a blessed Family Day 2019.

Yours lovingly,

Pastor Lek Aik Wee
