Revelation 1:5-6; The First Begotten of the Dead

Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, 6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Jesus Christ is the Faithful Witness of the way to God. The word “witness” means “martyr”. A “martyr” is a person who is killed because of his beliefs. Jesus testified that He is the Son of God, the One who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood.

The Bible says that no one is good enough and that every one of us failed. That why we call ourselves sinners. The word sin is from a Greek archery term that means to miss the mark – the centre of the target. [Don Miller, Cecil, Murphey] We are sinners because we have broken God’s laws as summarized in the Ten Commandments. Jesus bore our sins on the cross, shed His blood to wash away our sins. After Jesus died, three days later, He rose from the dead, conquering sin and death on our behalf – 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

This is the Christ whom the psalmist testified in Psalm 89:27-29 Also I will make him my first born, higher than the kings of the earth. My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

He is the first man who died and came alive again to live forever more. He was the first begotten of the dead. The most significant testimony to the plan of God to save sinful man from the curse of death as a result of his sin. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead won eternal life in heaven for us. God has made us kings and priests through faith in Him. And the Book of Revelation is to let Christians know, we shall escape the Great Tribulation to come, because of our faith in Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! May God’s Name be praised. Amen.
