2 Corinthians 9:10; He That Ministereth Seed to the Sower

2 Corinthians 9:10 Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)

Elijah the Tishbite came to the town Zarephath in Zidon. The Lord instructed him to hide earlier in the brook Cherith after he defeated the prophets of Baal to escape the persecution of Jezebel the wicked wife of Abab, king of Israel. After the water in the brook dried up, he left for Zidon at the beckoning of the Lord.

The Lord said to Elijah in 1 Kings 17:9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

It is interesting that the widow was preparing the last meal to partake with her son and that’s all they had. This was the story…

1 Kings 17:10-11 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

The Lord bless the widow with a constant supply of food during the time of the famine whereby she was able to feed Elijah and provided him lodgings.

1 Kings 17:13-16 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go anddo as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring itunto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day thatthe LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat manydays. Andthe barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

Thank God for the widow’s faith in trusting God and giving that last meal, as it were, dedicated to God. The Lord sustained her and her son through the famine.

MacDonald said well of this text, “The same God who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food is careful to make sure that those who show kindness to others will reap certain rewards.” Amen.
