(2) Jesus Turns Mourning to Rejoicing

In Luke 7:11-16, Jesus raised a dead man, the only son of a widow. It happened in a city called Nain, near the Capernaum in Galilee during the dead man’s funeral possession.  The widow was facing the greatest crisis of her life. Her only son, who will take care of her in her old age, had died. Not only was she mourning for the loss of her son but the prospect of a lonely and uncertain future.

13And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. (Lk. 7:13 KJV)

Observe the response of our Lord to her plight. Luke first described the response of our Lord’s loving heart – He was moved with compassion on her. And then the words of comfort that she be not sorrowful. Jesus bid her to “weep not”. The woman was in her helpless estate when our Lord came to comfort her.

14And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still…

Jesus came and touched the casket (bier). The funeral possession halted. The men that were carrying the casket stopped their movement. A most amazing scene is described here.

… And he (Jesus) said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. 15And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. (Lk. 7:14-15 KJV)

Jesus bid the dead man arise and the young man came alive from the dead. He sat up from the coffin and began to speak. Life was returned to the dead man. Jesus was able to raise the dead because Jesus is God. He is the eternal Word that was made flesh described in John 1:1-5.

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God.

John revealed to us that Jesus is the Creator of all things and that He is the Giver of life!

3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. (Jn. 1:1-5 KJV)

No wonder, the young man came alive again at the command of Jesus. Jesus is the Source of all life, in particular, human lives.

And He cared enough to help her. And He has the power to turn the widow’s mourning to rejoicing.

Knowing Jesus was the greatest blessing in the widow’s life. Jesus relieved her suffering by raising her dead son so that he can attend to her future needs. Consider all the miracles of healing that Jesus had wrought, raising a dead man must be the ultimate! Jesus has the power to conquer even death, not merely human diseases and infirmities. Indeed, the Bible records, after Jesus died on the cross, three days later, He rose victorious over the grave. Jesus conquered sin and death by His resurrection from the dead. And He is alive forevermore. This is the good news that there is salvation in Jesus Christ. Are you in any sorrow? Jesus is able to help you. Come to Him!

Only Jesus, only Jesus!

Only He can satisfy.

All my burdens are turned to blessings,

When I know My Lord is nigh.

God reached out to suffering and sinful men through His Son, Jesus Christ, who entered human history two thousand years ago. Jesus lived and walked in the land of Israel. Jesus authenticated His Deity, that He is God by the miracles that He performed. In particular, He alleviated the widow’s woe in the city of Nain by raising his son from the dead. Jesus is able to help us with all our woes! Come to Him today!

9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Rom. 10:9-10 KJV) Amen.

Yours lovingly,
