2 Corinthians 1:9, The Sentence of Death In Ourselves

2 Corinthians 1:9 But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:

The Apostle Paul speaks of the danger and the risk that he encountered in the work of the gospel. Many instances, he faced imminent danger to his very life and yet he learned that even in the most dangerous place according to God’s will is but the safest place. He learned to trust God to direct him to accomplish His will for his life. Clearly, it was a life of leaning on the everlasting arms of God’s care and protection.

The greatest impasse for mankind is death. The gospel is a pronouncement of the solution to this impasse. That God raised Jesus Christ, Son of God from the dead. By this death was conquered and there is promised to all believers the hope of the resurrection from the dead bodily in the day of Christ’s return. As such, though he suffered even unto death for the gospel’s sake, he was willing to trust God. In fact, he realized that he has not a better choice. He learned to trust and obey.

May the Lord grant His grace to His people to be dead to ourselves but be alive unto Christ. Amen.
