1 Corinthians 11:17, I Praise You Not

1 Corinthians 11:17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.

Why did the Apostle Paul rebuke the Corinthian Christians with the declaration “I praise you not”? Because he sought to set a godly order for the church in Corinth.

Although he begins the chapter with a commendation 1 Corinthians 11:2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. He proceeds to show them the areas of weakness. Thank God for the wholesome counsel offered by His servant.

Various aspects of church life has been highlighted, from the principle that the wife ought to honour her husband and the rebellion observed when she unveiled herself publicly, a clear violation of the custom and most of all, a slight to the husband’s headship, to the spotting of the hair for both men and women in the church how men ought not to have long hair and unkempt in public worship. He sought to point the Corinthian church to a more sanctified life and worship than the regress that he observed that tend to their hurt. The Lord will not be pleased!

May the Lord bless the instruction of His Word to the strengthening of His church. Amen.
