1 Corinthians 2:4-5, Trusting in the Power of God

1 Corinthians 2:4-5 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

The Apostle Paul understands that he is simply a vessel fully surrendered and given to the Master’s use. He shared that the old Saul has been crucified with Christ. He experienced the power of God when he was struck down by a bright light from heaven and lose his sight for three days. But in that encounter, he learned to fear God. He understood how weak and sinful he is, persecuting his Christ.

Jesus Christ is the Creator and the Sustainer of the universe –  John 1:3-4 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

The Apostle Paul dare not stand in his own strength because he understood the inadequacy of human wisdom. He was one who has encountered God. There was a testimony of a secret society leader who was gloriously saved. When he rejects Jesus, he could not sleep. It is a frightening experience to not be able to sleep. But when he surrendered to Jesus, he slept soundly. All his gambling dens lose money, an unusual situation, given that they are the best cheat. His henchmen persuaded him to leave Jesus if not, the gambling den will be shut down. He was given a glimpse of hell! He was so frightened of the horrors of hell, he testified that a soul cannot stand the torment for even one second. He told all his men that he has received Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. He encouraged them to do honest business. Many received his testimony and came out of the secret society.

The believer who has experienced the power of God in his life will learn to fear and tremble before the Almighty God. May His fear be in our hearts. May we live circumspectly, redeeming the time, be a testimony of God’s grace in our lives. Amen.
