1 Corinthians 2:1-3, Weakness, Fear and Much Trembling

1 Corinthians 2:1-3 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

William MacDonald said well, “The content of Paul’s message was Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Jesus Christ refers to His Person, while Him crucified refers to His work. The Person and work of the Lord Jesus form the substance of the Christian evangel.”

The Apostle Paul is a witness to the glory and power of the gospel. He was blinded when he first met Jesus on the road to Damascus. Jesus restored his sight. (Acts 9:1-22). He beheld the power of God to give and to take away in those three days of blindness. Frightening to experience that momentary wrath of God.

He realises how frail, weak and sinful and unworthy he is. And how glorious is the power of the gospel to save! And yet, it is God that justifies so that we cannot boast but humbly acknowledge that all we are and have comes from Him. We can only give thanks and declare to others that glory through the gospel that others outside the kingdom may experience God’s blessing.

May the Lord help us to be a good witness for Him this day in weakness, in fear and in much trembling. Amen.
