Romans 14:22-23, Whatsoever Is Not of Faith Is Sin

Romans 14:22-23 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. 23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Whatever in the Christian’s life that “does not spring from faith,” that is, “is not in harmony with an inner conviction that what he is doing is in line with his Christian faith,” this person is sinning because he is trying to silence the voice of conscience…To be sure, a person’s conscience is not the Final Judge of his actions…that Final Judge is God, or if one prefers, the Word of God. [Hendriksen]

For the Christian, therefore, it is imperative that he grows in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ through the consistent study of His Word. This will fortify the Christian with the understanding of the will of God to make godly decisions for His glory.

The church in Rome consists of those in different stages of spiritual growth and maturity, so it is in the local church. May God’s people be self-searching that each may conform to the image of Christ through the sanctification of the Holy Spirit through His Word. Amen.
