Romans 13:3, Rulers Are Not a Terror to Good Works

Romans 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

Law abiding citizens have no cause for fear. It is the law breakers that need fear because the ruling government is God’s instrument to mete out justice in any civil society. Law breakers are punishable by law. The government through its law enforcement agencies carries out the cause of justice. Thus, criminals and all evil perpetrators are dealt with by the law. Therefore, the Christian who obeys the law of the land is protected by the law and enjoys the benefits of peace. Without civil government, the country will be in a state of anarchy.

The Apostle Paul explains that civil authorities are sovereignly appointed by God. It is a comforting truth to know that God’s knows what goes on in every nation of the world in every age. He is the overall authority taking charge of all the affairs of men under heaven.

William MacDonald said well, “So God has instituted human government, and no government exists apart from His will. This does not mean that He approves of all that human rulers do. He certainly does not approve of corruption, brutality, and tyranny! But the fact remains that the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Believers can live victoriously in a democracy, a constitutional monarchy, or even a totalitarian regime. No earthly government is any better than the men who comprise it. That is why none of our governments is perfect. The only ideal government is a beneficent monarchy with the Lord Jesus Christ as King.”

Truly, we look forward to Christ’s return when He shall defeat the Anti-Christ kingdom and rule for a thousand years. We look forward to that glorious day! Amen.
