Romans 12:13, Distributing to the Necessity of Saints

Romans 12:13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

Jesus says it is more blessed to give than to receive.

Acts 20:35 “I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

The blessing of giving has to be experienced. How can we understand this truth except through the exercise of faith in our giving? We are to support the weak, those who are unable to return our favour, those who are truly in need. We have to take God at His Word to give and experience God’s blessing. When we give, we lose what we have given, how can it be more blessed? We are to take Jesus at His Word, obey and behold His glory in our lives in our giving.

There are 3 areas of giving for the Christian’s consideration :-

(a) Giving to the fatherless and widows

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

(b) Giving to the Poor

Proverbs 19:17 “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”

Bridges said well on this verse, “The ordinance of God is, “that the poor shall never cease out of the land.” Hence, the universal obligation is, to have pity upon the poor. We must open our heart as much as our hand.”

Deuteronomy 15:7 “If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother.”

Deuteronomy 15:10 “Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.”

(c) Giving to Needy Christians

1 Timothy 6:17-18 “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate.

Galatians 6:10 “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

The injunction to remember to do good for the needs of the saints with humbleness of heart. Look out for the opportunity to bless a brother or sister in Christ with your giving. Amen.
