Romans 8:3-4, The Glorious Gospel

Romans 8:3-4 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

The Apostle Paul has a glorious message of salvation to share. God’s own Son came as a man to save sinful men that they may be delivered from the ravages of sin. The law pointed to men their sin but has no power to deliver them from it. The law cannot help sinful men to make right with a holy God.

Jesus Christ is the God-Man. As God, Jesus represented God and as a Man, He represented man. He is the Mediator, to reconcile sinful men to God. Jesus Christ is sinless, born of the virgin Mary. He only qualifies as the unblemished Lamb, the perfect sacrifice to take away our sins, that men may draw nigh to God.

The redeemed man, therefore, is holy in the sight of God in that he is made holy by the merits of Jesus Christ. This is the meaning of the phrase “that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us”. When we repent of our sins and received Jesus Christ into our hearts, believing that He died and rose from the dead the third day, we are saved. By the indwelling Holy Spirit, we have the divinely-endowed strength to reject the way of sin and walk after God in holiness. Hallelujah, what a Saviour!

The born-again Christian is the most blessed person on earth. He has the spiritual strength to overwhelm the flesh, the corruption within him. Peace and joy abound in such a life. He is a testimony to the world. He has much to thank God for, as the psalmist declared, in Psalm 96:1-2 O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth. 2 Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day. Every day, he has a new song to sing, a new testimony of praise, because God is doing exploits with him. What an honour and privilege to be called sons and daughters of the most high God, to be a living epistle testifying of the power of the glorious gospel! May the Lord bless your day with a melody in your heart to praise Him. Amen.
