Psalm 46:1-11 To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. 4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. 6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. 7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. 8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth. 9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. 10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

(1) A Mighty Fortress Of God

– Hymn of the Reformation

Today, we remember the 499th year of the Protestant Reformation when Martin Luther, a monk of the Roman Catholic Church, nailed his ninety-five theses to the door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg in Germany on October 31, 1517 that sparked the Protestant Reformation.

It was a reformation of doctrine, a movement that restored the supreme authority of the Bible as our sole foundation for faith and practice. The biblical doctrines of salvation by faith alone, grace alone, Christ alone, Scripture alone and for God’s glory alone were proclaimed once again.

Believers are to live holy lives because they been made clean of all their sins by Jesus Christ’s atoning sacrifice on the cross through faith. The Holy Spirit indwells all believers. They are the temple of God. But if believers having been freed from the bondage of sin chooses to go back to the filth of sin, defiling themselves, God will deal with such ones.

The Apostle Paul exhorts God’s people to be actively serving their Lord Jesus Christ. Upon Jesus, this sure foundation we are to build. He enlightens us in 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. He especially charges those in the ministry – pastors, preachers, missionaries to be watchful how they will serve. Unless Jesus Christ is assimilated in their lives and in their teachings the name of Christ is exalted, their ministry will surely suffer loss.

There is only one way by which man can be saved. It is faith in Jesus Christ. This is the sure foundation that will stand the severest test. The only true foundation in which we receive spiritual life and the perpetual sustenance of it. This is the message of the gospel that the Apostle Paul preached, the same message we learn to preach.

Ecclesiastes 6:1-3

1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men: 2 A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease. 3 If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

The Apostle Paul shares the secret of his success. He is doing the will of God and so God endows him with wisdom and favour to build-up spiritual lives compared here to a building project. The word “master-builder” literally means “architect”. He speaks of God helping him to preach the gospel and enabling those in Corinth to believe. He laid a good foundation for their faith to grow. But he was not the only one labouring. There is another servant of God Apollos who continued the work where he left off. His concern for the church in Corinth did not cease when he left Corinth to carry on God’s work in other places. He is keenly aware of the strife and division in the Corinthian church and he is writing to defuse that animosity amongst brethren.

The Apostle Paul presents to the believers a proper understanding of God’s servants. They are fellow workers of God cultivating the crops in God’s vineyard. The vineyard belongs to God. The church belongs to God. The believers are God’s people. God’s servants are working together to accomplish God’s will and purpose for the salvation and edification of His church. He alone must receive the glory. With such an understanding, all division and strife will cease. Notice the emphasis of the verse on “God”, repeated three times in the “genitive” signifying “ownership”.
