2 Corinthians 7:4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.

The Apostle Paul had the spiritual well being of the Corinthian church top most in his mind. He has rebuked them but he has also praise them for their faith in God. Although he endured much hardship in the course of the work of the gospel in Corinth, the Lord granted him joy to see the conversion and establishing of the faith of the believers in Corinth. Just as the angels who rejoiced in heaven at the conversion of a soul, the Apostle Paul praise God for grant fruit to come in the lives of the Corinthian Christians in His season.

2 Corinthians 7:3 I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.

The Apostle Paul has to emphasize his love for the Corinthian Church. He spoke those words of warning by a loving entreaty to protect their spiritual well-being. He is by no means speaking a word of condemnation. There is no ill will or malice towards them but their welfare and interest were in his heart. He had to refute the false accusations against him and his team so that the good seed of the gospel sown will bring forth fruit in their lives.

Christ’s Seven Sayings On the Cross

(Edited and Extracted from “The Guide to the Gospels: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Four Gospels” by Graham Scroggie)

(1) The Significance of the Sayings

Last words are always important and are carefully stored in the memory, especially the last words of the dying, of the martyrs, of people who have been great leaders, inventors, discoverers, writers, and of our own loved ones. But all the greatest last words which have ever been uttered throughout all time are not of comparable significance and value with the Seven Sayings of Jesus on the Cross, and just because no one before or since can be compared with Him, no one before or since has been at once Perfect Man and Very God. It is His Divine-Human Personality that gives all that He ever said its value.

(2) The Number of the Sayings

“That there should be exactly seven, the sacred and mystical number of Scripture, is itself not without its significance” (Trench) No Evangelist records all of them, but each Evangelist records some of them. Matthew and Mark have one; Luke has three, and John has three.

2 Corinthians 7:2 Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man.

The Apostle Paul repudiated the unjust accusations hurled at him and his gospel team. They have been sincerely serving the Lord with a clear conscience. He defended his integrity and that of his team for the opposition raised through the voices of the Corinthian church from adversaries who preached a different gospel. As the spiritual father who brought the gospel to them, he sought to clarify so that the spiritual foundation laid in the hearts of the people will not be shaken.

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

The defilement of sin separates God’s people from the sweet fellowship with their Father in heaven.

Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of the flesh and spirit is the injunction. Let every sin be put away through repentance and confession.

1 John 1:8-10 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

The promise of God’s presence and power supporting us to this new life of holiness requires that we will rid our lives of all defilement. The defilement of sin that separates us from our Father in heaven, that grieves the Holy Spirit within us and shows our ingratitude toward our Lord Jesus Christ who saved us.

Defilement of the flesh includes all forms of physical impurity, whereas filthiness of the spirit covers one’s inward life, motives, and thoughts. [MacDonald]

2 Corinthians 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

To have the Lord Almighty as our Father is indeed a great privilege. It behoves us to be filial children, filial sons and daughters to our heavenly Father.

As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we all have three homes.

Our heavenly home that is our eternal dwelling place in heaven. This is our family in heaven.
Our church home that is our extended family bonded together by the blood of Christ.
Our family home with father, mother and children held together by blood ties.
There is an eternal perspective of our earthly life. As we live on earth, we are preparing ourselves for that heavenly home where we will dwell in eternity.

Job 4:12-21

12 Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof. 13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men, 14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. 15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up: 16 It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying, 17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker? 18 Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly: 19 How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth? 20 They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it. 21 Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom. (Job 4:12-21 KJV)

INTRODUCTION
Eliphaz has begun discrediting Job, putting to question his past actions of piety. Mr Counsellor is himself troubled and despondent. It goes to show that his claim of being a God-fearer, one who places his confidence in God and lived a life of uprightness is a vain show. “Look at yourself now,” Eliphaz points out to Job, “you are now fainting and troubled. You are disquieted! What happened to your faith in God? Has it now caved-in? Goes to how shallow is that faith that you profess!” This was how Job was discredited. His testimony in God called to question – “You comforted others but now look at you, do you not now wallow in self-pity too?”

This was to force a confession from Job, a sly ploy of Satan, to persuade Job to confess himself a hypocrite. If Job had capitulated, Satan would have won his case with God against Job.

Because Job was discomfited, he showed himself impatient under pressure, this was brought as evidence against him.

If Job is indeed a good man, why would these afflictions have come to him? It is not logical. He must have sinned against God.

It was a spiritual test for Job. He was not afflicted as a judgment for sin. Eliphaz concluded that Job’s present predicament has been a result of his sin. He is reaping the evil he has sown.

2 Corinthians 6:17-18 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

What a privilege for God’s people to receive God’s approval. We are exhorted to be separated from sin and idolatry. Job was such a man – Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? God thoroughly approved his servant Job and challenged Satan to prove Job! Job passed the test.

So did Daniel. He purposed in his heart not to be defiled with the king’s meat as a young captive in Babylon – Daniel 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. For Daniel, it began with a conviction (v8a) and follows with the courage to do right. Indeed, it begets God’s blessings. Daniel, in not defiling himself, was a clean vessel for God to manifest His glory. God blessed him in the following ways.

2 Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

After the resounding victory at Jericho, Israel sought to take Ai but was defeated. Ai was a much smaller and weaker city, yet they were defeated. What was the reason?

Joshua 7:1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.

During the conquest of Jericho, one man in Israel disobeyed God’s instruction to keep the spoil of the city which God commanded to destroy. This resulted in their defeat. They touched the unclean thing and kept it with them. Items dedicated and symbolising worship to the gods of the land. God was displeased.
