Lord’s Day, Vol. 14 No. 9

Art Thou He That Should Come?

Luke 7:18-23 (KJV) And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things. 19 And John calling unto himtwo of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? 20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? 21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. 22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. 23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

The Messiah of Israel, our Lord Jesus Christ, affirmed His salvific work with the curing of the sick and the preaching of the gospel to the poor. This was the Father’s will and the Son was fulfilling it in His earthly ministry. Why did John called two of his disciples to ask Jesus, “Art thou he that should come?” It is so that it might be affirmed to them that Jesus is truly the Messiah whom John proclaimed!

John 1:29 (KJV) The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Also, in John 1:35-36 (KJV) Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; 36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

Jesus demonstrated His Deity in the healing of the sick and the delivering of others from evil spirits by His extraordinary power. More importantly, it was to authenticate the gospel message that Jesus is indeed the only Saviour of the world.

John 1:11-13 (KJV) He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Our Lord Jesus then said, “Blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” Why should the gospel and Christ’s work of healing the sick be offensive? John 3:19 (KJV) And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. Our Lord further clarified in John 15:22-25 (KJV) If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin. 23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. Amen.
