Ephesians 1:17-18 Ye May Know What Is The Hope Of His Calling

Ephesians 1:17-18 (KJV) That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

The Apostle Paul prays to the Father that God’s people may spend time to know the hope of His calling when the Holy Spirit would illumine the eyes of their heart that it may be able to value and see eternal perspectives of life. It can be observed that after one is saved, he can stop growing if he does not spend time to seek to renew the hope of his salvation.

If we are not careful and do not spend time to renew the hope of our calling through the constant meditation of God’s Word, we will not set our affections on heavenly things but on the things of the world.

This Epistle to the Ephesians was written by the Apostle Paul when he was in prison in Rome, this is called a prison epistle together with Philippians, Colossians, Philemon round about 62-63 A.D. And thirty years later in 95-98 A.D., when the Apostle John was asked by Jesus to make an assessment of this church at Ephesus in the Book of Revelation, John wrote:

Revelation 2:2-4, “I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience…and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted… Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.”

Something has happened that has caused the Ephesian Christians to lose their first love. Their love has grown cold. Let it not be so for God’s people today! Amen.
