Martin Luther (1483-1546) – Monk ~ Preacher ~ Reformer
Used as a gentleman’s prison in Wartburg Castle (Eisenach) under the protection of Elector Fredrick the Wise, this wood-paneled chamber with a small alcove served Martin Luther, pursued by pope and emperor Charles V, as his living quarter and work quarters for ten months in 1521-1522. It is the authentic site where the reformer began translating the Bible. Luther’s translation provided a readable version of the bible for the mass of uneducated people of his time.
